Olive oil                 3 tablespoons
Laurel leaves          2 leaves
Method of preparation
Soak beans overnight in cold water or for one hour if hot water is used.
Peel, wash, and chop the pumpkin carrot, and tomato.
Peel the garlic and the onions; do not chop them.
Drain and rinse the beans. Heat a pot with water and salt, and add the beans.
At boiling point, reduce heat and simmer.
When the beans begin to soften, add the vegetable, laurel leaves, sweet pepper, paprika, and oil.
To avoid the beans from being crushed, do not stir with a spoon, but rather shake the pot gently, holding onto the handles.
Cook until is done and then remove from fire and serve.

In recent times there has been a radical promotion of quail eggs as possible treatment for several diseases from diabetes, high blood pressure to cancer. But nutritionists urge caution and call for scientific probe. 
CHUKWUMA MUANYA examines the possible health effects and dangers of eating quail eggs.
THE verdict is out: there are no documented evidence nor clinical trials that eating quail eggs could provide cure or prevent the development of diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, among other degenerative diseases.
  Until now, quail eggs are being marketed in Nigeria as a cure to male impotence, hair loss, type 1 diabetes, high cholesterol, tuberculosis, hypertension, cancer, wrinkles, among other diseases. 
  Egg consumption is a popular choice for good nutrients, which they are variety of chicken, duck, roe, and caviar, but by a wide margin the egg most often humanly consumed is the chicken egg. 
  Indeed, Thai researchers in a study published recently in International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications wrote: “Besides, a lot of people especially in Asian countries consume quail eggs which previous study reported that quail eggs are packed with vitamins and minerals even with their small size, their nutritional value is three to four times greater than chicken eggs. 
  “Regular consumption of quail eggs helps fight against many diseases, which is a natural combatant against digestive tract disorders such as stomach ulcers. Quail eggs strengthen the immune system, promote memory health, increase brain activity and stabilize the nervous system. They help with anemia by increasing the level of hemoglobin in the body while removing toxins and heavy metals. 
  “Chinese use quail eggs to help treat tuberculosis, asthma, and even diabetes. Quail eggs can help prevent sufferer of kidney, liver, or gallbladder stones and remove these types of stones. The nutritional value of quail eggs is much higher than those offered by other eggs with they are rich sources of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, and give us a lot of nutrition than do other foods.”
  But The Guardian’s investigation revealed that there is not a single clinical trial to prove any of the claims, nor were they listed anywhere in the world as therapeutic product.
  President Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Prof. Ngozi Nnam, told The Guardian in a telephone chat that there is no evidence to back up such claims. She, however, refused to rule out the possibilities of quail eggs containing substances that could provide cures to degenerative diseases and called for scientific investigation.
  “Nnam said: “People do not have evidence. You need to have to evidence. You don’t rule it out because these days with extensive discoveries on phytochemicals and antioxidants most diseases are treatable.
  “There is need for scientific verification of these claims. You cannot rule these claims out especially in these days of phytochemicals and antioxidants that is substances in natural products that can cure all.
  “However, I cannot say anything about quail eggs until after scientific investigation. Also, we have to be careful about quacks.”
  The results of a cross-sectional study of quail eggs conducted to evaluate the nutritional compositions of carbohydrate, fat, protein, calories, vitamin, minerals and sex hormones showed that average of each whole quail egg weight was 10.67 g.     
  According to the study published International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, their contents of ash, carbohydrate, fat, protein and moisture were 1.06, 4.01, 9.89, 12.7 and 72.25 g 100g-1, respectively. 
   The researchers from the College of Public Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, wrote: “Total energy in calories obtained was 156.50 kcal 100g-1 whole egg. The most essential amino acid found in egg whites, was leucine and the most non-essential amino acid was aspartic acid. Egg yolks contained the highest essential fatty acid content of linoleic acid and the highest non-essential fatty acid content of oleic acid.
  “In addition, there was high content of vitamin E in egg yolks and sex hormone progesterone in both of egg yolks and whites. The most essential and trace minerals of whole eggs were nitrogen and iron. Iron was high content in egg whites meanwhile nitrogen and zinc were found high in egg yolks. This study indicated that quail eggs contained high nutritional contents of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin E, sex hormone P and minerals of nitrogen, iron and zinc. Quail eggs are the good source of nutrients for human health.”
  A comparison of the cholesterol content of chicken and quail eggs showed that there was no significant difference in the cholesterol levels of large, white- and dark-shelled eggs.
  According to the study published in Journal of Food Composition and Analysis by Brazilian researchers, although slightly lower, the cholesterol concentration of small, white-shelled eggs was also not significantly different in terms of mg/g yolk.   
  The researchers wrote: “The cholesterol content of the quail egg in mg/g yolk was very similar to that of the chicken egg. No significant difference was seen also when the cholesterol levels of raw and cooked chicken eggs were compared. The overall average of the cholesterol content of the chicken egg was 12.0 mg/g yolk and that of the quail egg was 12.1 mg/g yolk.”
  A survey of the potentials of quail egg in human diet by Nigerian researchers revealed that quail egg was cheapest in comparison to other egg types. 
  The potentials of quail egg in human diet were evaluated among 44 randomly selected respondents in Vom, Plateau State.
  The study is titled “Alleviating Protein Deficiency In Nigeria: The Quail Egg Alternative” was published in Journal of Agriculture, Forestry and the Social Sciences.
  The researchers concluded: “It is therefore recommended that, there should be adequate co-operation between researchers and commercial quail breeders, while government policies in food security should take into cognizance, the great potentials in quail rearing (particularly the egg) because of its very high nutritive value, excellent taste and economy of production.” 
  Proximate analysis indicated that quail egg has a high crude protein content of 18.2 per cent. The findings further revealed that quail egg consumption spread across all age ranges and gender. Marital status was no barrier to quail egg consumption. Majority of the quail egg consumers were Christians (79.4 per cent) and low-income earners (52.9 per cent) with 58.8 per cent consuming it for its affordability, 29.4 per cent (for its taste) and 11.8 per cent (for nutritive value). Quail egg ranked third position in preference to other egg types, local chicken egg (fourth), Guinea fowl egg (second), and exotic chicken egg (first). 
Dosage
  Researchers from the poultry breeding unit, Faculty of Agriculture, Trakia University, Bulgaria in a recent study published in Trakia Journal of Sciences wrote: “According to recommendations of nutritionists about six chicken eggs per week provided by Bakalivanova and their weight equivalent (28 quail eggs), we could recommend the daily intake of four average quail eggs (13.5-13.8 g). With them, one receives 3.44-3.72 g essential amino acids. This way, an 80-kg man with either intellectual activities or engaged in heavy physical labour could satisfy 34.4- 37.2 per cent and 13.2-14.4 per cent of his daily needs, respectively. 
  “The daily consumption of four quail eggs provides 10.5 per cent of needed lysine from the ‘ideal protein’ and 14.1 per cent of needs from methionine+cysteine. The obtained energy is 383.3 kJ, together with 3.360 g unsaturated fatty acids, including 0.790 g ?6 and 0.033 g ?3 fatty acids. With four quail eggs one receives 29.1 mg calcium, 89.5 mg phosphorus, 4.7 mg magnesium, 0.76 mg Iron and 0.38 mg zinc.”

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin (INN), formerly amoxycillin (BAN), amoxycillin (cilamox) in Australia abbreviated Amox,Tormoxin (in India), is a moderate-spectrum, bacteriolytic, β-lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is usually the drug of choice within the class because it is better absorbed, following oral administration, than other β-lactam antibiotics. It is also a treatment for cystic acne.
Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by β-lactamase-producing bacteria, which are resistant to a broad spectrum of β-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin. For this reason it is often combined with clavulanic acid, a β-lactamase inhibitor, and marketed under one name. This increases effectiveness by reducing its susceptibility to β-lactamase resistance.

Mode of action

Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It inhibits cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up a major component of the cell walls of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Formulations

Amoxicillin in trihydrate form is available as capsules, chewable and dispersible tablets plus syrup and pediatric suspension for oral use, and as the sodium salt for intravenous administration (although the IV formulation is not available in the United States). It is one of the most common antibiotics prescribed for children, and the liquid forms are helpful where the patient might find it difficult to take tablets or capsules. It has three ionizable groups. A once daily dosing form (Moxatag) was approved by the American FDA in January 2008.

Side effects

Side effects are as those for other beta-lactam antibiotics. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, rashes, and antibiotic-associated colitis. Loose bowel movements (diarrhea) also may occur. Rarer, but patient-reported side effects include mental changes, lightheadedness, confusion, anxiety, sensitivity to lights and sounds and unclear thinking. Immediate medical care is required upon the first signs of these side effects.
The onset of an allergic reaction to amoxicillin can be very sudden and intense - emergency medical attention must be sought as quickly as possible. The initial onset of such a reaction often starts with a change in mental state, skin rash with intense itching (often beginning in fingertips and around groin area and rapidly spreading) and sensations of fever, nausea, and vomiting. Any other symptoms that seem even remotely suspicious must be taken very seriously.
Use of the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination for more than one week has caused moderate to severe hepatitis in a number of patients. Young children who ingested acute overdoses of amoxicillin manifested lethargy, vomiting and renal dysfunction.

 Nonallergic amoxicillin rash

Somewhere between 3% to 10% of children taking amoxicillin (or ampicillin) show a late-developing (>72 hours after beginning medication and having never taken penicillin-like medication previously), often itchy rash, which is sometimes referred to as the "amoxicillin rash." The rash can also occur in adults.
The rash is described as maculopapular or morbilliform (measles-like; therefore, in medical literature, it is called "amoxicillin-induced morbilliform rash"). It starts on the trunk and can spread from there. This rash is unlikely to be a true allergic reaction, and is not a contraindication for future amoxicillin usage, nor should the current regimen necessarily be stopped. However, as mentioned above, this common amoxicillin rash and a dangerous allergic reaction cannot easily be distinguished by inexperienced persons, and therefore a health professional should be consulted if a rash develops.
A nonallergic amoxicillin rash may also be an indicator of infectious mononucleosis: Some studies indicate approximately 80-90% of patients with acute Epstein Barr virus infection treated with amoxicillin or ampicillin develop such a rash.
Amoxicillin is one of the semisynthetic penicillins discovered by Beecham scientists. Classification vs. identification
Before going further it is worth pointing out the difference between classification and identification.
Classification answers questions of the sort: How is this fungus related to other fungi?
Identification addresses the more immediate question: What's the name of the specimen in front of me?
Classification therefore deals with evolutionary history and a good classification scheme should group evolutionarily close organisms near one another. This demands a good understanding of many different aspects of fungal structure (both macroscopic and microscopic) and fungal biology, since the different aspects provide different types of evidence regarding relationships. In order to develop a sound classification, all the evidence must be assessed.
The classification hierarchy
There are different degrees of relatedness in the living world and these varying degrees of relatedness lead to the concept of a hierarchy of different levels of classification - kingdom, division (or phylum), class, order, family, genus, species. That sequence goes from broad to fine. That is, a kingdom contains a number of divisions, each division contains a number of classes, each class contains a number of orders and so on.
A species name is a unique combination of two Latin (or pseudo-Latin) words. That combination is called a binomial. When photos on this website are labelled with species names, those names (such as Schizophyllum commune in this instance) <<042>> are examples of binomials. Going back to the earlier pigeonhole analogy, we could say one of our pigeonholes has the label Schizophyllum commune on it.
As noted in the {{ASCOMYCETES AND BASIDIOMYCETES SECTION}} those (macro) fungi can be divided into two groups, depending on whether spores are produced in asci or on basidia. Within the classification hierarchy, fungi that have asci constitute a Division called the Ascomycota and those with basidia constitute a Division called the Basidiomycota. These two technical names are obviously very similar to the ordinary English words ascomycete and basidiomycete. People often talk of "high level" or "low level" classificatory features. The former are used in the definition of higher groupings such as division and class while the latter are used at lower levels - for example, to define genera and species. In these terms asci and basidia are very high level classificatory features.
There are microfungal basidiomycetes and ascomycetes, but they are beyond the scope of this website.
While the (macro) fungi are contained within two divisions of kingdom Eumycota, the full range of organisms (macro and micro) that are likely to be called "fungi" are found in three kingdoms. Many of the features or techniques used in classification are also used routinely in specimen identification and often that is inevitable. For example, luminosity is one of the defining characteristics of the genus Omphalotus, an example of which is shown in the accompanying photos. <<001, 002>> This easily observable classificatory feature is obviously a very useful identification feature as well.
However, classificatory features are not always necessary in day-to-day identification work. For example, DNA analysis is now in widespread use for the investigation of relationships between different organisms. DNA analysis is often in the news because of its use as a forensic tool in criminal investigations. There will be a little bit more about DNA analysis later. For the moment it is enough to know that DNA analysis is a powerful classification tool but it does require specialist equipment and is impractical in much routine identification work. So mycologists often use the more easily observed features for much of the day-to-day identification work.
Classification and identification - final words
Sometimes the evidence from one approach may contradict the evidence from another approach. For example, the old classification (relying on "inkiness" as an important feature) put all the Inkcaps into the genus Coprinus - but DNA analysis says the Inkcaps don't all belong in the one genus - in fact, not even in the one family. What do you do when you get conflicting evidence? Obviously, re-check the methods to see if there have been any mistakes. If not, you can either accept one lot of evidence as more reliable than the other or leave the issue unresolved. Not necessarily a very happy result, but sometimes it's necessary to put a problem aside and wait for future developments to resolve the issue.
In the case of Coprinus, people redid the DNA analysis, using improved techniques, and still came up with the same conclusion. One thing to note is that the DNA evidence didn't come as a great surprise to some mycologists, since there had been considerable debate (over a hundred years) about the correct relationships between the Coprinus species. The DNA results prompted re-examination of the macroscopic and microscopic structures in various Coprinus species.
The DNA evidence indicates that Coprinus comatus and a few other species form a closely related group, so there's a good argument for grouping those species into a genus of their own. Apart from the DNA evidence, the species in this group share some microscopic and macroscopic features that aren't found in other Coprinus species. One macroscopic feature is very easy to see. The stem of Coprinus comatus is pipelike, rather than solid, but the pipe isn't empty. There's a wispy cord, composed of a bundle of hyphae, that runs the length of the hollow centre and has no known purpose. This photo shows a dried specimen of Coprinus comatus, with the stem cut open to reveal the wispy central cord. The cord is present in the other species that the DNA evidence groups with Coprinus comatus - but the cord is absent from those Coprinus species that are not grouped with Coprinus comatus.
At present, the status of the species in Coprinus is being debated and more work is needed before the debate is settled and any new genera agreed to.
However the Coprinus work does show that whenever a specialised technique is used to help classify fungi, it is essential to re-examine other features to see if there is anything that is correlated with the results from the specialised technique. That may not always happen but, in the current example, the cord in the hollow stem is an easily observed feature that is correlated with the genetic evidence. Therefore the cord would be ideal for identification purposes, assuming the Coprinus comatus group is placed in its own genus.




B vitamins
B vitamins are a group of water-soluble vitamins that play important roles in cell metabolism. The B vitamins were once thought to be a single vitamin, referred to as vitamin B (much as people refer to vitamin C). Later research showed that they are chemically distinct vitamins that often coexist in the same foods. In general, supplements containing all eight are referred to as a vitamin B complex. Individual B vitamin supplements are referred to by the specific name of each vitamin (e.g., B1, B2, B3 etc.).

Deficiency causes beriberi. Symptoms of this disease of the nervous system include weight loss, emotional disturbances, Wernicke's encephalopathy (impaired sensory perception), weakness and pain in the limbs, periods of irregular heartbeat, and edema (swelling of bodily tissues). Heart failure and death may occur in advanced cases. Chronic thiamine deficiency can also cause Korsakoff's syndrome, an irreversible psychosis characterized by amnesia and confabulation.

Symptoms may include cheilosis (cracks in the lips), high sensitivity to sunlight, angular cheilitisglossitis (inflammation of the tongue),seborrheic dermatitis or pseudo-syphilis (particularly affecting the scrotum or labia majora and the mouth), pharyngitis (sore throat), hyperemia, and edema of thepharyngeal and oral mucosa.

Vitamin B7
Deficiency does not typically cause symptoms in adults but may lead to impaired growth and neurological disorders in infants. Multiple carboxylase deficiency, an inborn error of metabolism, can lead to biotin deficiency even when dietary biotin intake is normal.

Deficiency results in a macrocytic anemia, and elevated levels of homocysteine. Deficiency in pregnant women can lead to birth defects. Supplementation is often recommended during pregnancy. Researchers have shown that folic acid might also slow the insidious effects of age on the brain.
Vitamin B12
Deficiency results in a macrocytic anemia, elevated homocysteineperipheral neuropathy, memory loss and other cognitive deficits. It is most likely to occur among elderly people, as absorption through the gut declines with age; the autoimmune disease pernicious anemia is another common cause. It can also cause symptoms of mania andpsychosis. In rare extreme cases, paralysis can result.
B vitamin side effects

Intake of 3000 mg/day of nicotinamide and 1500 mg/day of nicotinic acid are associated with nausea, vomiting, and signs and symptoms of liver toxicity. Other effects may include glucose intolerance, and (reversible) ocular effects. Additionally, the nicotinic acid form may cause vasodilatory effects, also known as flushing, including redness of the skin, often accompanied by an itching, tingling, or mild burning sensation, which is also often accompanied by pruritus, headaches, and increased intracranial blood flow, and occasionally accompanied by pain. Medical practitioners prescribe recommended doses up to 2000 mg per day of niacin, usually in time release format, to combat arterial plaque development in cases of high lipid levels.

B vitamin sources
B vitamins are found in whole unprocessed foods. Processed carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour tend to have lower B vitamin than their unprocessed counterparts. For this reason, it is required by law in the United States (and many other countries) that the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folic acid be added back to white flour after processing. This is sometimes called "Enriched Flour" on food labels. B vitamins are particularly concentrated in meat such as turkey, tuna and liver. Good sources for B vitamins include kombucha, whole grains, potatoes, bananas, lentils, chili peppers, tempeh, beans, nutritional yeastbrewer's yeast, and molasses. Although the yeast used to make beer results in beers being a source of B vitamins,[22] their bioavailability ranges from poor to negative as drinking ethanol inhibits absorption of thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), biotin (B7), and folic acid (B9). In addition, each of the preceding studies further emphasizes that elevated consumption of beer and other ethanol-based drinks results in a net deficit of those B vitamins and the health risks associated with such deficiencies.
The B12 vitamin is of note because it is not available from plant products, making B12 deficiency a legitimate concern for vegans. Manufacturers of plant-based foods will sometimes report B12content, leading to confusion about what sources yield B12. The confusion arises because the standard US Pharmacopeia (USP) method for measuring the B12 content does not measure the B12directly. Instead, it measures a bacterial response to the food. Chemical variants of the B12 vitamin found in plant sources are active for bacteria, but cannot be used by the human body. This same phenomenon can cause significant over-reporting of B12 content in other types of foods as well.
Another popular means of increasing one's vitamin B intake is through the use of dietary supplements. B vitamins are also commonly added to energy drinks, many of which have been marketed with large amounts of B vitamins with claims that this will cause the consumer to "sail through your day without feeling jittery or tense."Some nutritionists have been critical of these claims, pointing out for instance that while B vitamins do "help unlock the energy in foods," most Americans acquire the necessary amounts easily in their diets

Because they are soluble in water, excess B vitamins (such as may be ingested via supplements) are generally readily excreted, although individual absorption, use and metabolism may vary… The elderly and athletes may need to supplement their intake of B12 and other B vitamins due to problems in absorption and increased needs for energy production. In cases of severe deficiency B vitamins, especially B12, may also be delivered by injection to reverse deficiencies. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics may also be advised to supplement thiamine based on high prevalence of low plasma thiamine concentration and increased thiamine clearance associated with diabetes. Also, Vitamin B9 (folic acid) deficiency in early embryo development has been linked to neural tube defects. Thus, women planning to become pregnant are usually encouraged to increase daily dietary folic acid intake and/or take a supplement.
